Revellers across Hackney have won funding for 31 Big Lunch events to mark tomorrow’s coronation.

The council offered grants of up to £750 for community events and received 51 requests for Big Lunch funding.

There will be 18 Big Lunches in Hackney over the weekend, and the remaining 13 will be held in the coming weeks.

This compares with “more than 30″ Big Lunches for the Queen’s Jubilee last June, according to the Town Hall.

The council also had eight applications for road closures, compared with “around 24” events last year.

Wilton Way, Grayling Road, Allerton Road, Statham Grove, Middleton Road, Ickburgh Road, Leagrave Street, and Elmcroft Street will be closed for coronation events.

Street parties are limited to 200 guests who must have links to the area, and rules mean alcohol cannot be sold and formal entertainment is banned.

Hoxton Street Market is hosting a coronation celebration tomorrow, with music by Grand Union Orchestra, an arts circus and crown-making workshops.

There’s also a concert by students from Hackney and East London School of Music taking place at Hackney Town Hall on Monday. The celebration will feature Scottish bagpipe music and a parade from Town Hall Square to the Assembly Rooms that all residents can enjoy.

Meanwhile, the Newington Green Meeting House is hosting an alternative event for those not caught up by “the pomp and circumstance of coronation say street parties and rolling TV coverage”.

Organisers said the event from 7-9pm on Saturday is for everyone, whether they are “a republican, a monarchist or don’t have a view”.

People are invited “to join us to raise a toast to the community, solidarity and radical spirit”.
