A  Grade II listed mansion block in the borough has been fully restored  after months of restoration work to save it from going to ruin.

Earlier this year, Hackney Council and English Heritage noticed 222 Mare Street was falling into disrepair and requested that repair work begin on the listed building.

Work began in February and drew to a close this week when the scaffolding on the mansion block was finally removed.

The block’s owner benefited from technical advice and support from both Hackney Council and the building contractors.

A  whole host of different repairs have been made, bringing new life to  the building. Plain clay tiles have been used on the original  roof, as well as the chimney stacks and side gable. Repairs have also  been made to the building’s brick, stonework and windows, accompanied  with extensive re-painting.

Cllr  Guy Nicholson, Hackney Council Cabinet Member for Regeneration and the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, said: “It is great that historic  buildings in Hackney Central like 222 Mare Street and 195 Mare Street, The New Lansdowne Club, have been restored.  It is another success  story for Hackney Council and also good news for shoppers and residents  in the area.”

Hackney is crammed with listed buildings. As well as 222 Mare Street, the borough boasts Hackney Empire, 195 Mare Street and the Town Hall, among other listed buildings.
