Campaigners fighting plans for a Sainsbury’s supermarket in Stoke Newington will pack into the Town Hall to show their opposition yet again when an application by developers Newmark Properties goes before the council’s planning sub-committee for a third time next Wednesday (December 11).
Identical plans submitted by Newmark Properties in July are currently the subject of a judicial review being brought by campaign group Stokey Local.
Newmark Properties says it has resubmitted the application to give Hackney Council a chance to address concerns about the application process.
In April councillors rejected a similar application by Newmark Properties.
John Page from Stokey Local said council officers had recommended the latest application be approved, and he expected councillors would vote in favour.
He added: “We do not believe that the council can take a fair decision on an application that it has already approved when it is defending that decision against judicial review.”
Campaigners have in the past organised eye-catching protests against the proposed development, including a ‘bug parade’ held earlier this year to highlight alleged impacts on ecology around Abney Park.
